About Us
Ashar Alo Society is a community based non government registered organization working for rights, support, care, empowerment and greater involvement of people living with or effected by HIV and AIDS in Bangladesh. Ultimate goal of AAS is to support HIV/AIDS infected and affected people for ensuring their well being, improving quality of life, health care and creating a society that is free from stigma and discrimination.
In 1st August 2000, Ashar Alo Society was formally established as a formal entity of PHA and got regional recognition through project on GIPA since September 2001. Ashar Alo Society started working as the first independent self-help group of PLWHA in Bangladesh since 1st January 2002 with the support from Family health International (FHI). Afterward AAS has been receiving financial support from UNDP-Regional HIV and development Program, UNICEF, CCDB, Action Aid Bangladesh, HASAB, CAFOD and Tides Foundation.
From its inception AAS has been providing peer counseling, assistance for HIV testing, VCT service, life skill, peer education and positive living training, outreach services, medical assistance and advocacy & networking for ensuring more services for the PLHA.
The staff of AAS presently is a combination of HIV positive and non-positive person. And not only as staff, PLHAs are involved in the EC committee (among 7 members total 6 are HIV positive) and also in General body has some significant role. PLHA members also take part in different major activities such as peer counseling, peer education, community sensitization meeting, positive speakers bureau, experience sharing with MARP as well as in different forum.
